Making room for tulips

I always have a hard time finding a place to plant new tulip bulbs because I’m afraid of splitting bulbs that are already in the ground.
To make the job easier, I dig holes in the spring while the tulip foliage is dying. In between the recently bloomed tulips I plant gladiolus bulbs. In the fall, after the gladioli have finished blooming, I dig them up and replace them with tulip bulbs for the following spring.
